The Destiny-Breast09 phase 3 clinical trialwith participation of Vall d’Hebron Breast Cancer Group Institute of Oncology (Vhio) of Barcelona, has identified a new therapeutic combination in the first line with “greater efficacy” than the treatment in Her2+ metastatic breast cancer.
The work, published in the magazine The New England Journal of Medicine, has shown that the combination of trastuzumab deruxtecan conjugated antibody with pertuzumab monoclonal antibody improves progression-free survival in patients with this type of cancer who had not previously received other treatments directed against Her2 or chemotherapy, Vhio reports in a statement this Wednesday.
It is “the first study” that shows benefits of a new experimental combination that has been used since the diagnosis of advanced disease and that surpasses the standard treatment established more than a decade ago for these patients.
Her2+ breast cancer represents approximately 20% of breast tumorsand its especially aggressive growth is mainly due to the overexpression of the Her2 protein.
44% reduction
The results of the study, presented during the last congress of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (Asco)show a median progression-free survival of 40.7 months in patients treated with the experimental combination versus 26.9 months in those who received standard treatment, which represents a 44% reduction in the risk of progression or death.
The objective response rate of trastuzumab deruxtecan plus pertuzumab was 85.1% and the median duration of response in this group of patients was more than 3 years (39.2 months).
