The Community takes pride in Madrid’s leadership in health

The Minister of Health, Fatima Matutetook advantage this Thursday of the good data on the surgical waiting list in the Community of Madridwith the lowest delay for an operation in all of Spain for the fourth consecutive year

Specifically, the Community of Madrid closed last year with a total of 80,525 people on the surgical waiting list and an average delay of 50 days to be operated on in a hospital, the lowest in Spain as a whole, according to the latest data published by the Ministry of Healthcorresponding to December 31.

In statements in the corridors of the Assembly sent to the media, the Madrid counselor has highlighted that this average of 50 days of delay is three times below that of Catalonia, with 142 days of average delay, and the national average, which stands at 121 days, that is, 71 days more.

After Madrid, at the end of 2025, the regions with the least delay were the Basque Country (64), Galicia (73) or La Rioja (78). On the other hand, Andalusia led the list with the longest delays, with 173 days, Cantabria, with 137, and Aragon, with 132.

These data assume that the Madrid health continues for the fourth consecutive year as the region with the shortest time average delay for an operation, as highlighted by the regional government. In 2024, the time you had to wait in Madrid’s healthcare system was 48 days.

“The data is what supports us with the results we have,” stressed the Madrid counselor, who stressed that in any case “it would help a lot if everyone” worked “for Health, for the life that we have to preserve” just as the Community of Madrid does.

Furthermore, the region also has the lowest data for patients with a wait of more than 6 months for one operation, a total of 657, which represents 0.8% of the total, compared to the national average of 21.6% or 32% registered in Catalonia.

Likewise, the region is among the communities with Shorter waiting time for a consultation with a specialist doctor in its public health with 68 days, while the average in Spain amounts to a total of 102 days, that is, 34 days more (+33%).

In this case, the Canary Islands lead the list with the longest delay times, with 162 days, Navarra, with 152, Aragon, with 138, or Andalusia, with 136. In the queue, on the other hand, are Melilla, with 16 days, La Rioja, with 32, or the Basque Country, with 49.

“We are not satisfied, that is why we continue working, we continue investing in professionals, which is our greatest treasure,” remarked Matute, who stressed that these data are possible thanks to these personnel.

Furthermore, he recalled that in 2026 there will be a “historic” investment in public healthwith more than 11,000 million euros, 36% of its annual budget, but it has demanded more. “We asked the Minister of Health and the Minister of Finance, now they have changed, but he was also a doctor, to invest more in Health in a finalist way because they have reduced 50% of the budget,” he said.

He has also highlighted our management and coordination and investment in high technology. Thus, he recalled great future projects such as the City of Health, with 1,000 million investment for the largest public health complex in Europe and with the latest technology in the sector.

“In Madrid we want to continue leading the Healthcare of the future with these indicators and demonstrating how things should be done,” he concluded.
