The flu epidemicwhich this year started early, seems to be subsiding. Since mid-December, the incidence of cases in primary care has not stopped decreasing and the same has been happening, since the beginning of January, with the hospitalization rate.
Specifically, in the week that ended on the 18th of this month, they registered in health centers 54.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants –73.4 the previous week– and the positivity of the tests was in 23.4% –30.5%, the previous week–, according to the latest data published by the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII).
That same report also indicated that, in hospitals, the rate has been in free fall since the beginning of the year, going from 11/100,000 – it was the maximum recorded this season. at 5/100,000, in just 14 days.
Record flu numbers
This season leaves an estimated maximum incidence – detections + positivity – of 443.5/100,000which places it as the epidemic with the most transmission in the last 5 years. The next was 2023-2024, with a peak of 441.5/100,000.
Of course, at the level of hospitalizations, the record of 2023-2024 has not been surpassed, when it was reached at a rate of 16.6/100,000.
Increases RSV transmission
In parallel with the fall of the flu, which occurs almost a month earlier than expected, the detection of cases of bronchiolitis caused by the flu has increased in recent weeks. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (VRS).
This infection especially affects the youngest, but also to vulnerable seniorswhich is why this season they began offering doses against this virus to people who live in residences in various communities – next fall it will be offered throughout the country.
In the case of RSV, at the primary care level, positivity is located in 17.3% –13.6%, the previous week–, the rate in children under 5 years of age in 259.9 cases/100,000 –213.1 cases/100,000, the previous week (after decreasing in recent weeks, it rose again)– and the estimated global incidence in 98.3 cases/100,000 –80.5 cases/100,000, the previous week. In hospitals, the hospitalization rate is 3.9 cases/100,000 (3.7 cases/100,000
Covid, at a basal level
Finally, the third virus that the ISCIII monitors in its report, the SARS-CoV2, caused by Covid-19, is at low levels of transmission, both in health centers –estimated rate of 3.4 cases/100,000– and in hospitals –estimated rate of 0.2 cases/100,000–.
