The XI edition of the National Congress and the XV Ibero-American Congress of Alzheimer’s has started its first day on the island of Ibiza, in which the situation of Alzheimer’s in the world has been addressed. Organized by the Spanish Confederation of Alzheimer’s and other Dementia (@AlzheimerCeafa), the Consell d’Eivissa and Alzheimer Ibero-America (AIB), together with the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer’s Patients of Ibiza and Formentera, as host, These days will be held until next Saturday, November 8, under the motto ‘Breaking borders’.
The Fairgrounds on the island of Ibiza hosts this welcome day, which also included the presence of the Queen Sofia. During the event, the Minister of Social Welfare, Family and Equality of the Consell d’Eivissa, Carolina Escandellwas proud to host this “important and necessary” congress. In addition, he stressed the need to humanize the purpose and in the future completely eradicate the disease, either with treatments or vaccines to prevent it from manifesting.
For its part, the president of CEAFA, Marilo Almagrohighlighted that this Congress is being held in a “historic” moment, Well, we are attending one of the greatest milestones in the field of treatmentafter more than 20 years without any pharmacological innovation. “The approved drugs, even though they are not yet available in our health system, mark the path to be followed by research, I don’t know if towards a cure, but towards prolonging periods of people’s quality of life; and from there to the chronicification of the disease.”
The president of AIB also intervened, Jesus Rodrigowho highlighted the role of the associative fabric, which leaves its mark at different levels: scientific, social, media and political. Finally, the president of FAIB/AFA Eivissa and Formentera, Rosa Sanchezthanked all those present for their effort to participate in this eleventh edition of the National Alzheimer’s Congress on the island of Ibiza.

Alzheimer’s in the world
After the start of the Congress, the plenary session ‘Alzheimer’s in the world’ took place, presented by the CEO of CEAFA, Jesús Rodrigo, and in which the CEO of ADI-Alzheimer’s Disease International, also participated. Paola Barbarino; the Project Officer of AE-Alzheimer Europe, Soraya Moradi; and the secretary of AIB-Alzheimer Iberoamerica, Bertha D. Quezada.
The session began with Bertha D. Quezada explaining that the challenge of Alzheimer’s in Latin America is huge due to the lack of sensitivity of governments with this issue. “On many occasions the greatest burden falls on us as associations since we have experience. We have learned to be caregivers to support our family members.” For this reason, he demanded greater resources to care for patients and families.
Another topic of the plenary session was whether there is awareness about what dementia means at a social level. For Paola Barbarino It doesn’t exist, “that’s why we have Alzheimer’s awareness month.” Additionally, he spoke about rehabilitation which is a “key” area within the dementia care continuum and which has historically been underused and unnoticed as a means of care and support for people living with dementia.

The importance of contacting support
At another time in the afternoon we discussed the importance of the associative movement and synergies at the international level. At this point, Soraya Moradicommented that it is essential to know the barriers they face in order to identify them and learn from them. Moradi also mentioned how beneficial it is to incorporate different generational points of view in partnerships.
This Congress will take place until next Saturday, November 8and during these four days plenary sessions, parallel tables/presentations, meeting points for professionals, training classrooms, exhibition and poster areas will be organized. All of this in order to generate knowledge by promoting openness to participation and the exchange of experiences and good practices always for the benefit of the group and their families.
