A study led by researchers from the Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu from Sant Boi de Llobregat (Barcelona) has discovered a direct relationship between movement difficulties associated with Parkinson’s and the loss of folding of the cerebral cortex.

The results, published in the journal ‘Brain Communications‘, they point out that the reduction in cortical folding affects key regions in the processing of sensory information which, according to the researchers, could be linked to the slowdown in motor fluidity, reports SJD in a statement this Wednesday.

The research has been based on transversal collaboration, which has allowed us to adopt a “complementary and rigorous” perspective to integrate clinical, technological and methodological knowledge.

The work shows that the rMagnetic sonances could become a “key test” to detect changes in the cortex related to bradykinesia, the extreme slowness of voluntary movements.

This would allow for faster diagnoses, “more precise” medical support and a more accurate quantification of the impact of new therapies, as well as opening the door to transforming the clinical approach to Parkinson’s.
