Sensor detects key Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s biomarkers

A team of researchers from the University of Cádizin collaboration with the University of Sousse (Tunisia), has developed a chemical devicenanometer-sized, that identifies the presence or absence of neurotransmitters involved in the development of degenerative diseases.

For this, combines gold nanoparticles synthesized from pine leaf extractsultrasound technology and an electrochemical sensor that detects these key substances in the diagnosis of neurological pathologiesas explained by Fundación Discover in a statement.

Specifically, this device records the levels of dopamine and serotonin in blood serum samples, chemical compounds that act as biomarkers in diseases such as Alzheimer’sParkinson’s and some types of cancer.

With a low energy consumption for manufacturingworks similarly to a glucometer, i.e. measures the levels of these two compounds that act as brain messengers and which, subsequently, requires medical interpretation by a health professional.
