The new “window of hope” against Alzheimer’s

The head of the Neurology service at the La Luz University Hospital, Dr. David A. Pérez Martínez, has indicated that the new antiamyloid therapiesdrugs designed to act on the protein responsible for the formation of plaques in the brain that contribute to the cognitive impairment of Alzheimer’sallow us to open a “window of hope” for patients and families.

“These treatmentssome already approved in other countries and currently being evaluated in Spain, seek slow the progression of the disease in its earliest stagesopening a window of hope for patients and families,” explained Dr. Pérez during a symposium organized by the hospital and the Alzheimer Spain Foundation.

Other advances and some pending challenges

During his intervention, the specialist has also addressed the advances in non-invasive neuromodulationa technique that uses mild electrical or magnetic stimuliapplied from the outside of the skull, to modulate brain areas involved in memory and other cognitive functions. “This technology is showing encouraging results for improve symptoms and enhance response to other treatments“added Dr. Pérez.

The meeting has also served for different experts to analyze the pending challengessuch as the need to carry out earlier diagnosess, further translational research or the integration of personalized therapies; and so that caregivers have reported the “toughness and commitment” involved in caring for these patients.

“Alzheimer’s is not only fought in laboratories or consultations; also from the understanding, support and involvement of the entire society”, underlined the technical director of the Alzheimer Foundation Spain, Esther Arnanz Narganes.
