A study led by the research group on Bipolar and Depressive Disorders of the research institute Clinic-Idibaps has shown that skin temperature, measured with a smartwatch, can be an objective biomarker of psychopathological states in people with bipolar disorder.
The work, published in the magazine Journal of Affective Disordershas monitored 104 people with bipolar disorder for two consecutive days while they went about their usual lives, Idibaps reported in a statement this Tuesday.
Participants wore a smart watch that recorded the skin temperatureand the researchers compared the circadian pattern of this parameter between 4 groups: patients in a depressive episode, patients in a manic episode, stable patients with bipolar disorder and healthy controls.

Results
The results show that skin temperature during daylight hours it is “significantly higher” in patients in a manic episode, compared to those stable or in a depressive phase.
The increase disappears when the manic episode ends and the person returns to stability, suggesting that skin temperature, measured non-invasively and continuously during daily life, could “objectively” characterize the psychopathological state in bipolar disorder.
The first author of the study, ClĂ udia Valenzuela-Pascualhas pointed out that the potential of skin temperature lies “in its combination with other biomarkers”, such as heart rate or physical activity.
